Countries of the world by continent

The full list with flags, and the country pairs that get confused most on a map.

A toy globe

Every country on one map is the whole point of MapZap, so here is the full list, sorted by continent, with the flag next to each name. Before the list: the pairs that cost the most points, because the fastest way to get better at countries is to stop confusing eight of them.

The ones people mix up

Niger and Nigeria

Niger is the big landlocked one to the north. Nigeria is on the coast, below it.

Slovakia and Slovenia

Slovakia touches Poland and Ukraine. Slovenia touches Italy and the Adriatic.

Austria and Australia

Different continents, same quiz mistake every single day.

Iran and Iraq

Iraq is the western one, between Syria and Iran. Iran is the big one that reaches the Caspian Sea.

Uruguay and Paraguay

Uruguay has a coast, south of Brazil. Paraguay is landlocked, in the middle.

Gambia and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea

Four countries, one syllable. Gambia is the thin one inside Senegal. Guinea-Bissau is just south of it, Guinea south of that, and Equatorial Guinea is nowhere near, down by Cameroon.

Sweden and Switzerland

Sweden is the long Scandinavian one. Switzerland is the small Alpine one. Nobody admits to this one, everyone has done it.

Dominica and the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic shares Hispaniola with Haiti. Dominica is a small island further south, in the Lesser Antilles.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are there?

193 UN member states, plus a handful of widely recognised states depending on who is counting. MapZap uses 197: 46 in Europe, 48 in Asia, 54 in Africa, 35 in The Americas, 14 in Oceania.

Which countries are the hardest to find on a map?

The small ones with big neighbours: Eswatini and Lesotho inside South Africa, Brunei on Borneo, the Gambia inside Senegal, and the island states of the Pacific and the Caribbean. Central Asia and West Africa are the regions most players struggle with.

How does the MapZap countries quiz work?

Learn mode shows a country name and you tap where it is on the map, filtered by continent if you like. Blitz gives you three lives and gets harder with every question. The campaign then mixes countries in with landmarks, flags and capitals.

Next: flags of the world, capitals of the world.

MapZap is free on the App Store and Google Play.
